The Fly Tying Expo evolved from an exhibit on the history of fly fishing in 2012 at Turtle Bay Exploration Park in partnership with the Shasta Trinity Fly Fishers, the Northern California Council - International Federation of Fly Fishers (NCCIFFF) and the International Federation of Fly Fishers.
Over 50 fly tyers from Northern California, Oregon and Nevada will be featured at the Expo. Fly tying sessions will be on Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
There will also be special exhibits, programs and hands-on activities including fly tying and casting.
Youth activities (see below) have been expanded this year to include a scavenger hunt with prizes. Hands-on activities will be featured all day long on in Zubie's classroom.
Turtle Bay Exploration Park will be offering a $4 admission discount to Expo attendees.
The Fly Shop, an event sponsor, is offering a one time discount coupon to STFF members and Fly Tying Expo attendees and participants.
Expo Programs & Presentations
Saturday, April 11
- 10:30 a.m. – Fish Feeding, Visible River Exhibit (22,000 gallon aquarium)
- 11:00 a.m. – Casting presentation, outside near the south end of the Sundial Bridge
- 11:30 a.m. – Creature Feature, live animals from Turtle Bay Exploration Park
- 1:30 p.m. – Mike Mercer presenting the story of bugs in Northern California lakes, streams and rivers.
- 2:45 p.m. – Diving for Answers, a diver in the Visible River Exhibit answering your questions
Sunday, April 12
- 10:30 a.m. – Fish Feeding, Visible River Exhibit (22,000 gallon aquarium)
- 11:00 a.m. – Casting presentation, outside near the south end of the Sundial Bridge
- 11:30 a.m. – Creature Feature, live animals from Turtle Bay Exploration Park
- 2:45 p.m. – The Sacramento River and It’s Fish, Interpreter sharing information and answering your questions in the Visible River Exhibit

Daily Schedule, all day, each day
- 50 fly tyers will be demonstrating the art of fly tying. Come watch and ask questions of the tyers and find out; when, where and how they use these imitations to catch fish around the world.
- Hands On – Tie your very own fly using the equipment and materials the demonstration tyers are using.
- Hands-on – Cast a fly rod with help from demonstration casters.
- Youth hands-on activities will be featured all day long on Saturday and Sunday in Zubie's classroom (Schedule TBD)
- Youth Scavenger Hunt - Each day kids will be able to participate in a scavenger-type hunt and win a prize.The grand prize is a fly tying kit from the Fly Shop.
