Project Healing Waters –Shasta County is a free program providing wounded, injured and disabled veterans an opportunity to learn fly fishing . Attending veterans are afforded the opportunity to discover the wonders of fly fishing through fly-casting, fly tying, rod building, entomolgy, and fly-fishing clinics and trips. These clinics and classes are speicifically tailored for wounded, injured, or diapbled, current or ex-military personnel. The program is offered to assist in adapting skills to new abilities and to peorsons of all skill levels ranging from beginners, to those with prior fly fishing experience.

All fly fishing equipment, fly-tying equipment, classes and events are provided to all participants at no cost. Fishing trips, both one day and multi-day are also provided at no cost to participants.

Project Healing Waters is unique program where volunteers teach classes on an on-going, long-term basis. It is not just a one-day fishing trip; it is an opportunity to learn for a lifetime. For many participants, particularly the disabled veteran, the socialization and camaraderie of the classes are just as important as the fishing outings. These events provide them a new activity outside of the home or facilities.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Trintiy River Event

One of the 2016 goals for PHWFF Redding was to provide our participants with on the water fly fishing opportunities and experiences that promote the physical and emotional rehabilitation of the wounded and disabled veterans. Brown TroutIn addition to our program of weekly Monday meetings, we have incorporated fly fishing outings that average one outing per month to locations throughout northern California.

The Redding PHWFF program took participants on their annual fish out for steelhead and brown trout on the Trinity River on March 24th. The higher water from the El Nino rains this year made some portions of the river a bit challenging and thus most of the fishing occurred on the upper stretches of the Trinity below the steel bridge in Lewiston.

For some of our participants, this was there first experience fishing the Trinity River, testing their skills fishing, catching and fighting wild steelhead. All of the participants hooked fish with some fortunate enough to land a few nice sized fish and even a brown or two with a few half pounders thrown in to boot. The weather this year was again glorious which produced an epic caddis hatch in the early afternoon. Unfortunately the fish seemed to be a bit closed lipped for bugs flying around the river.

The group stayed at the Indian Creek Lodge prior to the float down the river. They enjoyed a pot luck steak dinner with all the fixings the night before the drift, which has become a new tradition and enjoyed a dinner with the guides at the new Café at Indian Creek Lodge following the drift.

A thank you to John Letton, his staff and chef Scott Boone for hosting our group and their support of PHWFF and a thank you to all the guides who donate their time to support our Redding PHWFF program.
